They were here before us – the animals – and we were once them. They know we are different and their eyes tell us to keep our promise. –

Geoffrey Lehmann– (‘The Animals’, The New Yorker June 01, 2009)

Candice is a south african artist and massage therapist whose practice traverses the terrain of healing and creative inquiry.

Of her artwork: with animals as stand-ins for the human psyche, her work probes the shadowy corners of selfhood – where instinct meets vulnerability, and vice is recast as misunderstood virtue. Her creatures, rendered in loose, multiplying lines, are both symbolic and deeply personal, occupying spaces that are at once constructed and internal. Candice resists easy definition, favouring duality, uncertainty, and a visceral honesty.

Through layering, repetition, and erasure, she both constructs and deconstructs meaning, inviting us to sit with the unresolved, to peer beneath the fur and feather, and to find, perhaps, some truth in the shifting edges of form.

Leaving the canvas with what is essential.
